Ai Otsuka - Pocket

Tracklist:
1. Pocket
2. Ticket
3. LIFE – LOVE CiRCLE
4. Pocket (Instrumental)
5. Ticket (Instrumental)

This is Ai’s 17th single selling in excess of 61,350 copies, reaching 5th on the Oricon weekly charts.

This single starts off with a slow ballad called Pocket; Ai uses soft vocals which I enjoyed. There are some nice piano and guitar arrangements. However this song can get a bit on the boring side because it is so slow, and doesn’t really build up, a good song, but not one of Ai’s best.

Ticket is an upbeat song. Her vocals sound somewhat strained in this song, but it adds a strangely soft effect to it, maybe because it sounds like she’s whispering. About two thirds through the piece violins are added, and the coda has a nice soft piano solo. It’s a nice sweet song.

LIFE – LOVE CiRCLE… hmmm, interesting name, for an “interesting” song. This song is mainly in English with the exception of the phrase “Maru Ai,” i.e “Love Circle” in English; placed at random places throughout the song, particularly towards the end. The English is very heavily accented, making it a wee bit hard to understand, but a nice try, considering she doesn’t speak English. The electric guitar chords throughout the song add an aggressive feel to it, but nonetheless fantastic.

Not one of Ai’s best singles, with the B-Sides being the main attractions, although her voice is very strong, and unique, placing Ai up there with the other big name J-Pop artists.
